Communications Limitation — Critical
The USPN Caldera's communications array cannot reach the CARG squad at surface distance on Athena. This is a known limitation of the vessel class at this operational range and was assessed prior to deployment.
The Corax drop ship, piloted by SUNBEAM, serves as the communications relay between the Caldera in orbit and the squad on the surface of Athena. The relay chain — Caldera to Corax, Corax to squad — is the only communications link Captain Sable Renn has with her people on the ground.
This is a single-point dependency in the mission structure.

The Caldera was pulled from reserve fourteen months before the Athena deployment. The reason given in the reassignment order is administrative. The actual reason — why a specific reserve carrier was assigned to a classified operation requiring deniable assets — is consistent with a pattern that is not visible from inside the deployment. The ship was chosen. The commanding officer was chosen. Neither of them knows the full reason why.
